A Rack & Pinion on a straight axle? Yes, it is now possible, this is Cross Steer®, a unit is specifically for 1928-1934 Ford street rods. This innovative design steers off one side, creating very little bump steer that would occur using a traditional rack & pinion. There is no play in the rack travel, as it is smooth and consistent through out the length of its travel. This means that Cross Steer® eliminates tight spots and loose spots so common with conventional steering boxes.

The Cross Steer® Rack & Pinion offers a significant reduction in steering effort, even at low speeds. Cross Steer® has 6" of rack travel which travels at the rate of about 1.6 per rotation of the pinion, giving Cross Steer® about 3-5/8 turns lock to lock as compared with a typical Vega-style steering box with 4 turns lock to lock. Plus, Cross Steer® is competitively priced with current steering boxes.

Installation is easy! Takes only about an hour to install when replacing a Vega style steering box. Cross Steer® utilizes a bracket that mounts to the Vega style bracket on frames: it is the same three bolt pattern.

If you do not have a Vega on your frame or are building a new car, we can send you Cross Steer® with plain bracket without holes that can be directly welded to your frame. Then it is a matter of attaching our link to your steering arm. The link is long enough to accommodate 46"-48" axles. The link comes threaded for the common 11/16" Early Ford Tie Rod End (Left handed thread) used on so many of these Fords. The kit does not come with a Tie Rod End but if you need one, Unisteer can supply you with that as well.

Cross Steer® is available in a New Build Kit(Kit 1) and Retro Kit(Kit 2), the difference is that the Retro Kit(Kit 2) is for users replacing a Vega style steering box, it includes a coupler, section of shaft, and hardware. This compensates for the distance between our pinion and the Vega spline, so you can use this shaft and hook up your column with out modification, using even the same U-Joint!

The New Build Kit(Kit1) does not include the shaft kit, and if you are building a new car you do not need to get the shaft kit and can run a U-joint down to the pinion of the Cross Steer®. The pinion size of the Cross Steer® is 9/16" 26 count spline which is a common size, the same as a manual Mustang Rack & Pinion.

Cross Steer® comes with a polished housing, stainless adaptor and a chrome plated tube. Options include choosing your mounting bracket finish as illustrated in the parts below.

Following the same design as the successful and proven Cross Steer® for 28-34 Fords, this Cross Steer® system has been modified to work with 35-40 Fords. The bracket is a larger heavier bracket that allows the Rack and Pinion to sit lower. It mounts on the inside of the frame rail and utilizes the factory rivet holes. The Rack & Pinion unit has 6 inches of rack travel with a ratio that gives about 1.6 inchs of travel per rotation of the pinion.

This is a bit slower to accommodate the heavier weight of these vehicles, reducing the effort that if would takes to steer the vehicle. The steering link is thread for the 11/16 Early Ford Tie Rod End(Left handed thread).

The kit does not come with a Tie Rod End but if you need one, Unisteer® can supply you with that as well.

Steering Linkage must run to the pinion of the Cross Steer®, the pinion size is a 9/16 inch 26 count spline, which is a common size, the same as a manual Mustang Rack & Pinion.

Unisteer Performance Parts also carries U-joints and section shafts if you need them.

Applications: this Cross Steer unit is not universal for 35-40 Fords. For the Cross Steer to work you must have an unboxed frame, or be will to un-box and section of your frame. Also this unit works only with stock axles or 2inch drop axles. Unfortunately this unit will not work with 4 inch or 6 inch drop axles as the unit will sit to low. Also suspension wise, if you have a wish-bone set up the wishbones must be split, a four-bar set up works fine as well.
